My current work is in development of automated drone flight for search and rescue applications. In my research we investigate methods of localising isolated individuals in emergency situations using autonomous flying drones, exploiting GSM/GPRS protocols and GPS to discover the positions of lost individuals.
Previously within Insight I've worked in optimisation of home appliance energy use for homes with integrated sensing, as part of the AUTonomic HomE area NeTwork InfrastruCture (AUTHENTIC) project under the International Energy Research Centre (IERC). For this work I deal with home sensor data and make use of CSP solvers operating within a limited computing environment (Android tablets) to suggest adjustments to time- and frequency of appliance use to home-owners to help them save on energy and expense while minimising disruption to their daily routine.
My PhD thesis is titled: "Integration of Micro- and Macroscopic Models for Pedestrian Evacuation Simulation" conducted as part of the Nembes Network Embeded Systems project, and I received my doctorate in 2014:
This research investigates generation of micro- and macroscopic simulation models from building geometry for the purpose of simulating pedestrian movement in sensor-equipped smart buildings during emergencies. We develop the EvacSim multi-agent pedestrian simulator and algorithmically generate macroscopic flow graph models from building space geometry, and "couple" these graphs to the free-space Social Forces microscopic pedestrian model. By integrating micro- and macroscopic approaches to simulation of the same emergency space, each model type can exploit the strengths of the other to achieve scalability and accuracy that would otherwise be infeasible.
In the past I have worked on constraint-based medicine prescription expert systems (MSc thesis: "Constraint-based Clinical Decision Support for Medicine Prescription", 2009), wireless indoor localisation using Bluetooth LE (Enterprise Ireland Research Voucher with 4Impacts), and audience engagement analysis in commercial advertising, by exploiting heterogeneous datasets (EI feasibility study grant with 4Impacts).
I also have an interest in game development, my game "Boxkite" was developed in Unity and is available for free on the Google Play store for Android devices.
