Dr. Lauri McDermott
Exercise is a wonder drug. It can prevent, improve or cure a variety of health problems and it is absolutely free. Lauri’s research is focused on the prescription of exercise for people with a variety of chronic illnesses. She has been involved with the ‘MedEx’ programme in DCU Sport, helping to run and set up classes for people with heart disease, lung disease, peripheral arterial disease, diabetes and cancer. She developed a home-based exercise programme for cancer survivors as part of her PhD and is now working as a post-doctoral researcher within INSIGHT. The projects she is involved with include MedFit and PATHway (Physical Activity Towards Health) which use technology to enable people after cardiac events to exercise at home.
