Moving Well Being Well: Exploring Components of Physical Literacy in Irish Children

The proposed research wants to equip the new generation of children with the skills they need in recreational daily life activities to engage, and enjoy participation in physical activity. Original and new ways to address the above mention problems of inactivity and obesity are the keys for any future success story. We now need to change the way we address those problems. The prevention, through education, of the lack of motor skills proficiency will provide the children with the tools they need, enabling them to face the challenges of the modern society while preventing numerous comorbidities (e.g. diabetes, cardio vascular diseases, etc.). It is now time to do something different, addressing a problem that i) teachers and parents cannot address successfully and ii) coaches struggle to implement and assess. This innovative development of an intervention targeting primary school children through GAA personnel provides a unique opportunity to reach out to thousands of kids across the country. The front line staff will have the knowledge required to make a difference. They have the potential to significantly increase the children’s motor skill proficiency levels giving them the motor repertoire they need to engage and enjoy physical activity participation. This would potentially be very relevant to the GAA’s player pathway, particularly within the ‘Play to Learn’ strand.
